This is a very insightful piece. Hard to believe this type of thing occurs in modern civilization.
‘At the “Vision 2016” National Conference in September 2013, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud committed to deliver a nationwide “one man, one vote” election by August 2016’
Today my uncle sold his youngest daughter – a 16 year old – to the highest bidder (yes, I mean quite literally sold – whereby the father is approached by the would-be-husband and they negotiate a price – you can still sell girls here), the highest bidder being of a political background, with strong connections to international NGOs and a member of parliament. It should also be mentioned, that my uncle works for the government as well.
Know that these two men, are educated, powerful, influential and dare I say, 21st century crooks and abusers, yet at the same time maintain the claim that they champion women’s rights.
The purchase of my cousin has brought shock, loathing and dismay –…

Wow. It really is hard to believe that these type of things still occur in the world. It is crazy to think that some in some countries this is the norm and that this is part of their culture. This reminds me of a documentary I watched in one of my classes two summers ago about women in India. What I learned from the video is that in their culture, they don’t get to choose who they will marry. Their parents do. Also, women do not have a say in many things, the interview showed a woman saying she had no say in how many children she would have and she was not allowed to get on birth control. It’s crazy to think that women don’t have basic rights in some countries.

I do support this idea, some people who are intellectual have the skill of make changes in society, they can promote awareness to others, have the facility to empower the people around them. Another way I think will help become intellectual someone who is not is by be multicultural and be aware of other, cultures, traditions in order to learn to recognize social issues in the different communities.

It was hard to hear how the women in Somalia are being treated more like objectives and property than human. I can’t believe men don’t see the women as equal as them but address them more as slaves. But many other countries give women rights and provide the same equivalent power as men so, why in Somalia everything is still the same. It seems the men in Somalia fear to let women have power and freedom. They should respect the women more and let them have a future of taking another role than just being a housewife. A father, uncle, godparents, siblings should protect and respect their daughter or sister and let them dream something else than being someone slave that is not allowed to disobey their master. When two people are married, they love each other and respect each other boundaries. Also in the relationship is two people working together to make it work and communicate with each other, not having one person controlling their partner like property. If women in Somalia have the same equal power as other countries, have it won’t make it worst, but women can create opportunities to make Somalia a better place for is people. But still what is it that men fear about women having power and freedom? WOmen don’t belong in cage to be locked up away from the world like birds.
