I wrote an essay close reading two of Ta-Nehesi Coates’s articles regarding police brutality against black people, structural racism, and Ferguson. I discuss what today’s options for blacks are, how they can’t trust society/the government to correct itself, and how there needs to be a consistent movement against these things. I truly enjoyed reading your article. Of course you have selected a topic that stirs my passion. In your piece, you state, “In order for blacks to have hope that someday their lives will be valued in this country, they must rise up now in their communities and adamantly struggle to secure their rightful esteem.” I concur wholeheartedly, but this doesn’t set a clear agenda for moving forward. This would have been an ideal time to set a tone of unity in the black community. You are correct assimilating is a problem, but how do you fix that when we escape we seek refuge.
Two of the challenges facing blacks in the U.S. have to do with a lack of group-identity and a lack of a common cause. During the civil rights era, people knew what they were fighting for. There were identifiable things they could list and discuss. But how exactly does one fight for justice and fair treatment in a country that prides itself on freedoms. The question for the American society is how does one experience freedom without justice and fairness?
You’ve done a wonderful job in framing complex issue. Now we just need to create an action plan to address these issues and keep it moving.
