I live by the statement “don’t judge a book by its cover” .
I grew up in foster care and when people find out about my childhood, 99 percent of the people say ” you don’t look like you went through the stuff you did” every time I hear that I question myself, how does a person who went through the stuff I did have to look like, depressed?! I have yet a to find a good response to their comment…

Loly Machedo made some excellent points when he talked about not judging someone or categorizing someone through their CBL or VOP. What stood out to me was when Loly said just because he looked a little different due to the tattoos he has, didn’t mean he was any different than anyone else. However, having tattoos has cost for people to be quick to judge, and assume he is a horrible person. It saddened me because we as people seem to judge others, and think the worst about a person just by looking at them when in reality we know nothing about that person. That’s why I believe it is important not to judge anyone based on their CBL or VOP. Not only is it wrong to do, but people do not seem to realize that they can potentially miss out on meeting a great person, and its all because they decided to judge someone beforehand instead of taking the time to get to know them.

Loly Machedo took a brave step by talking about the way people are judged. A big part of who we are has to do with what is within rather than what you see on the outside. I have found when I meet new people I reminded of this. Many times after talking with someone I have just met I realize how they were not what I expected them to be. Machedo pointed out the things he liked to do and asked who enjoyed those same things. Many of us enjoy the same things but don’t realize it because we fail to look beyond the exterior. I am always trying to reflect on situations that I have found myself judging someone by the way they look. Yes, I am guilty of this. I’m not proud of it and I do it without even thinking. Just yesterday there was a homeless man who followed me out of a store towards my car and I was afraid. Turns out I dropped my phone when I was paying and he was returning it to me. After I felt bad for being afraid and wondered why did he spark that emotion. Since I have begun my social work career I have found myself reflecting on why and what encouraged the feelings I didn’t understand. I think that this is what Machedo was trying to point out. If we take the time to understand CBL and VOP we could really start to understand how we are all the same. And regardless of what you look like, it has nothing to do with who you are or what you are about.
